Superbowl Sunday– LAS VEGAS sports books had a winner this Sunday but the car makers SUPERBOWL ADS were 3 for 11.
#1. DODGE CHARGER SRT. A bit sexist but certainly spot on the demographic. Not that women don’t get excited when the supercharger in the V8 6.0 liter Hemi kicks in. I know a few women who agreed the garage space is an easy throw-away to some of the items on the list. And could you pick up some milk on your way home?
#2. Audi GREEN MACHINE. It took awhile for the horsepower to kick in on this story-line, but eventually we got it. A thinking-WOman’s commercial, but really, the A4 AVANT wagon was too pedestrian for the typical Audi owner, and the cop with the Styrofoam cup was overkill. I wanted the supercharged $150K R8 back. MISSED: Mental test drive/cool factor.
#3. KIA SORENTO Clever use of the family/urban SUV with the Monkey getting a tattoo. MY test drive review of the Sorento tells alot more about this ride, but who hasn’t left their favorite toy in the back of the family car? Missed: price, warranty and weblink CTA.
#4./5.6.7. The Hyundai SONATA story got long, when all we really needed was the price. The car is good looking. The warranty is well-known. Are there any on the dealers lots yet? Hope so, cause the Call to Action could be a million dollar waste come Monday.
#8. Honda Cross-tourer animation fell far short of the hip factor one would expect from Honda. Maybe the truth is Honda is starting to show it’s age. MISSED: Price
#9. CARMAX. Really lost the focus while waiting for the animals to do something cool. Did anyone even catch the pitch? MISSED: everything.
#10. CARS.COM The guy is super-human until he gets to a car lot, really? This had so much more potential. Previous year Superbowl ads so much better. The BUDWEISER Clydesdale’s beat this one. Missed: the point.
#11. CHEVY-GM. OH yeah, lets throw our awards at the viewer as they clean-up the kitchen. The only reason this got any eyeballs was the desire to see NO QB Drew Brees make a humble acceptance speech. Missed: YAWN.
The only car company missing was Toyota with thier apology ad.

KIA takes a shot at the auto world by releasing the first 2011 product of the year…in 2010 Debuting 9 months early, they slam it down with outstanding lease offers, rebates of up to $2000 and 0% for 48 mos or 3.9% for 72 mos. Combined with the 10 year 100k power train warranty, you ask, what car is this?
Enter the all new, completely redesigned 2011 KIA SORENTO.
The fact is the new 2011 KIA SORENTOis a solid choice in a market crowded with no less than 155 choices between SUV and Crossover models, according to Edmunds.com IF you own a competitive product, KIA will give you $1000.00 to switch, add mini-vans and you have 200 autos to choose from.
All that aside, the new Sorento offers 3 package choices; Base, LX and EX in a 2wd and 4wd drive configuration. Skip the 172hp 4 cyl and grab the v6 with 273 hp. While fuel economy is not this models strong suit, neither is it a pig compared to Jeep and other similar 6cyl selections. The towing capacity is down from 5000lbs in previous Sorento versions, but rarely does the family pull more than 3500 lbs. with this type of suv. 4wheelers, jet skis, snowmobiles, pop-ups and small boats will travel just fine on the tail of this versatile carry-all. Speaking of seven passengers seating, these are real seats, albeit for children under twelve. The folding back row works like any traditional rear split bench, and has real headrests, unlike the goofy Outlander.
Built larger than most in the compact SUV/Crossover field: TOYOTA Venza, HYUNDAI Tucson and Nissan Roque, the 2011 Sorento delivers a ton of features including double moon-roof, intelligent stereo with text and email reading capability coming in 3rd quarter, heated leather seats, touch-button start, dual climate control, 18” rims, hill descent, traction control and back-up camera with park assist. All these luxury features for under $32k, WOW!
Yet silly LITTLE things we take for granted, are missing… NO home link for the garage door, NO power lift gate, NO memory seats and NO mirror in the sun-glass holder option that let’s me see the kids fighting in the rear seats.
The Sorento is reasonably quiet on the road, delivering solid handling and smooth ride on average roads. The engine responds with a surge when you press it from third to fourth and settles out nicely when cruising 80mph+. Visibility is good, no outrageous blind spots with the third row up and the larger side mirrors with marker lights are a good idea. I can’t wait for every vehicle to get the vehicle approach sensors in the side mirrors (Ford/Mazda), they are very addicting. The front seats are lacking in the bottom cushion and bolster design but they do offer a modicum of back support for those concerned about long trips. Only the driver’s seat has 8-way power adjustments.
I wish KIA had given the 2011 Sorento some of the cool interior design touches of the Kia Soul: mood lighting/contrasting fabric/leather colors and blue backlit digital gauges like the Kia Forte Koup.
The 2011 Sorento will appeal to a wide variety of clients; it would be nice to have a few more of the hip styling components to go with the technology promised later in the year. This vehicle has not yet been safety crash test rated. 19-29mpg is the average for the 4cyl. vs. 6 cyl., 2wd/4wd. I didn’t take it off road, so I defer the outward bound limitations for another day. However, as a solid family sport-ute it delivers on many levels for a great price, especially with the current incentives.

I recently had a short, abrupt conversation with a salesperson in New Hampshire about the origin of a USED vehicle on his lot, I was trying to negotiate for a client. After reading the AUTOCHECK report he had emailed to me I asked one (1) question that he chose to answer in this way…
SARAH-Question: “Do YOU know if the dealer that only kept this car for ten days before sending it to auction, was a “Subaru” dealer or a non-Subaru dealer?”
DEALER-Answer: “Why the previous dealer sent it to auction is irrelevant to us. We bought it and now we want to make $XXXX on it.”
AH…
SARAH-Comment: “Well, I think that is too much money for that car. “
DEALER-Comment: “Well we can agree to disagree.” Then he gave me some suggestions about my website and hung-up on me.
Okay, thanks for the suggestions but here is the real reason I am repeating the story. The value of a CARFAX or AUTOCHECK is only as good as the information about problems they know exist, as sourced by them.
My reason for asking the question was this: If the dealer isn’t a Subaru dealer, needed cash or doesn’t sell a lot of Subaru’s in his market (warm weather) he/she choose to “turn” the car quickly. HOWEVER, if these were not the reasons for turning the car over to the auction before trying to sell it off their lot, then I have to wonder if there was a problem with the car. When dealers buy cars at auction they have the opportunity to return a car that has a SERIOUS problem, i.e.: “FRAME DAMAGE”. However, if they discover other problems once home, well, the new dealer/owner inherits the problems to fix or off to the next buyer.
So next time you take a glance at a CARFAX or AUTOCHECK, understand the information that isn’t there doesn’t guarantee the vehicle is trouble-free. Online vehicle inspection reports do not have automatic access to the accident history of every car as it transfers title. If a car had been in an accident and repaired for less than 60% of it’s value, the local Motor Vehicle Department (where most of the registration and mileage information comes from) will not have the accident and repair cost or amount of the damage on file. Retrieving this information is up to the company SELLING you the report (CARFAX, AUTOCHECK or VINCHECK) and the disclosure policy of the previous owner’s insurance company. Read the fine print, these information providers will not be held responsible for what they didn’t tell you. Asking the question doesn’t guarantee a truthful answer, but inquiring about things that may be an issue opens the door to a more thorough investigation. It is obvious to me this salesperson did not want to have any further conversation with an educated buyer.
Oh well, it’s not the last car on earth and it won’t be the last time I ask these questions. That’s why I say, get your own independent inspection before buying the car. For more tips on used car buying click HERE.
