1. Mini-SUV’s under $22k test drive review

    March 9, 2010 by mycarlady

2010_mazda_cx-7_20301769-EI drove the ‘10 Honda CRV,  ’10 Mazda CX-7, 2011 Kia Sorrento 4cyl, 2010 Nissan Rogue and the 2010 Toyota Rav4. WOW, what a difference in cars, for the same (approx.) money.  Allow me to start by saying I drove the base model in all the vehicles listed:  Power windows, locks, tilt, cruise, automatic, and air conditioning.

The 2010 MAZDA CX-7 had the best overall design; exterior and interior. The seats were firm without being too stiff.  Alloy wheels and iPod adapter are standard. It had plenty of get up and go for a 4cyl, and the city mileage was 20 to the others 21 and 22.  The incentives are 0% for 36mos. 1.9% for 60 mos. All in all it got my 5 Star vote for comfort and value, handling and horsepower.

The Honda CRV-LX was the 1st runner-up in this category. The interior is roomy, albeit plain. The fit and finish very tight but the overall feeling screamed ” plastic”.  Seats offered good support, handling and horsepower were responsive once I  got moving from second to third gear.  Fuel economy is in the same ball park as the others in the category: 22/28. The exterior isn’t flashy or classy but says urban yuppy, to date myself.  No incentives of any kind make you have to REALLY want to buy 2010_honda_cr-v_20308247-300x189this car, all things being equal; warranty, reliability and price.

2011_kia_sorento_20324459-EIn the middle of the pack is the 2011 4cyl. Kia Sorento.  While the interior and exterior styling are superior to the others in this class, feature packed and boasting the best warranty at 5yr. or 60k mile basic and 10yr. or 100k power train, the big BUT was in the acceleration.  The drive-wire gas pedal makes you do a double push to get the car moving.  This issue kept me questioning the engine responsiveness, horsepower vs. torque and finally the pedal itself. At one point it felt like a CVT engine powered by belts and pulleys on a power-band rather than a traditional transmission.  I had previously driven the 6cyl Sorento, which didn’t reflect the same pedal predicament, perhaps because of the larger engine displacement. The Kia Sorento uses slightly more gas as a 6cyl, however with the abundance of loyalty, conquest and interest rate incentives (0%)  if you want to move up to the bigger engine, the price and value are all there.

Staying the course of 4cyl mini-SUV’s, not to be confused with crossovers, the Nissan Rogue 360 was the ride of the day. The body styling resembles the Mazda CX-7, however, the front grill embellished with chrome accents looks out of place.  Interior is roomy, but boring, with wide spans of plastic in all the obvious places.  The 360 package offers 16″ alloy wheels and a handy back-up camera in the rear view mirror, along with some other options for a $1000 more, still keeping it in the $22k price point of the group. 2010_nissan_rogue_20309879-EGas mileage states a 22-28 return but the hunting of the transmission between first and second gave me cause to doubt we will see 22mpg in the summer with the air conditioning fighting the Vegas-style 105 degree heat.  Incentives are similar to the others; low interest rate financing available to those qualifying with a 695 or higher FICO AUTO credit score.

2009_toyota_rav4_20244170-300x189 Last and least favorite: 2010 Toyota RAV-4. Never mind the obvious recall issue troubling the Toyota fans everywhere. This steel rimmed, plain ole, same old, was a BIG disappointment in the interior styling, size, value and performance categories.  It moves around well once you get it past first gear, however, as the smallest mini-suv in the pack, I felt it should have been much more responsive. The incentive at 0% for 60 mos. is a big step for Toyota, as they see sales dropping with every news report. The Rav4 lacked any ambition to be the best in a venue it once clearly owned.

I tried to drive the 2011 Hyundai Tucson and 2010 Kia Sportage, but the local dealers had no base models for comparison. I will try back in another review and bring you the inside story.

  3. CAR SUPERBOWL ADS Winners & Losers

    February 7, 2010 by mycarlady

chargerSuperbowl Sunday– LAS VEGAS sports books had a winner this Sunday but the car makers SUPERBOWL ADS were 3 for 11.

#1. DODGE CHARGER SRT. A bit sexist but certainly spot on the demographic. Not that women don’t get excited when the supercharger in the V8 6.0 liter Hemi kicks in.  I know a few women who agreed the garage space is an easy throw-away to some of the items on the list. And could you pick up some milk on your way home?

#2.  Audi GREEN MACHINE. It took awhile for the horsepower to kick in on this story-line, but eventually we got it. A thinking-WOman’s commercial, but really, the A4 AVANT wagon was too pedestrian for the typical Audi owner, and the cop with the Styrofoam cup was overkill.  I wanted the supercharged $150K R8 back. MISSED: Mental test drive/cool factor.c501186a

#3.  KIA SORENTO  Clever use of the family/urban SUV with the Monkey getting a tattoo. MY test drive review of the Sorento tells alot more about this ride, but who hasn’t left their favorite toy in the back of the family car? Missed: price, warranty and weblink CTA.

#4./5.6.7. The Hyundai SONATA story got long, when all we really needed was the price. 54273cc25df04321a9623a6d806a0aaeThe car is good looking. The warranty is well-known. Are there any on the dealers lots yet? Hope so, cause the Call to Action could be a million dollar waste come Monday.

#8. Honda Cross-tourer animation fell far short of the hip factor one would expect from Honda. Maybe the truth is Honda is starting to show it’s age. MISSED: Price

#9.  CARMAX. Really lost the focus while waiting for the animals to do something cool. Did anyone even catch the pitch? MISSED: everything.

#10.  CARS.COM  The guy is super-human until he gets to a car lot, really? This had so much more potential. Previous year Superbowl ads so much better. The BUDWEISER Clydesdale’s beat this one. Missed: the point.

#11. CHEVY-GM.  OH yeah, lets throw our awards at the viewer as they clean-up the kitchen. The only reason this got any eyeballs was the desire to see NO QB Drew Brees make a humble acceptance speech. Missed: YAWN.

The only car company missing was Toyota with thier apology ad.

  4. TOYOTA COMPETITION TURNS UP THE HEAT

    January 27, 2010 by mycarlady

AUTOMAKERS carve up TOYOTA with increased deals in wake of RECALL.

Mazda extended their 0% financing on 2010 Mazda 3’s to 60 mos. OAC. 2010_mazda_mazda3_20267145-E

Kia boasts about their 10 yr. 100k power-train warranty and $399.00 lease or 0% for 48 mos. on the all-new 2011 Kia Sorento

Chevrolet dealers are offering conquest money to dump your Toyota or assistance to get out of your lease early. 2009_hyundai_genesis_20232690-300x189

While not all Toyota models are affected by the recall, customers are returning recent purchases in record numbers across the country.  Afraid to drive them and concerned about resale values, consumers are turning to Nissan, Honda, Mazda, Kia and Hyundai dealers in hopes of finding a suitable replacement amid the confusion about parts and service for the still unknown cause of the faulty accelerators.  The competition prepares for a boom in business, and import factories are releasing port-parked stock as soon as car haulers arrive.

Meanwhile, Toyota dealers and their Customer Care Hotline take calls and struggle to quell their clients fears. How bad will the lasting effect be on Toyota’s brand image is anyone’s guess?

  5. 2011 KIA SORENTO 0% or $399 lease a STEAL

    January 20, 2010 by mycarlady

KIA takes a shot at the auto world by releasing the first 2011 product of the year…in 2010  Debuting 9 months early, they slam it down with outstanding lease offers, rebates of up to $2000 and 0% for 48 mos or 3.9% for 72 mos. Combined with the 10 year 100k power train warranty, you ask, what car is this?

Enter the all new, completely redesigned 2011 KIA SORENTO.

The fact is the new 2011 KIA SORENTO is a solid choice in a market crowded with no less than 155 choices between SUV and Crossover models, according to Edmunds.com IF you own a competitive product, KIA will give you $1000.00 to switch, add mini-vans and you have 200 autos to choose from.

All that aside, the new Sorento offers 3 package choices; Base, LX and EX in a 2wd and 4wd drive configuration. Skip the 172hp 4 cyl and grab the v6 with 273 hp. While fuel economy is not this models strong suit, neither is it a pig compared to Jeep and other similar 6cyl selections. The towing capacity is down from 5000lbs in previous Sorento versions, but rarely does the family pull more than 3500 lbs. with this type of suv. 4wheelers, jet skis, snowmobiles, pop-ups and small boats will travel just fine on the tail of this versatile carry-all. Speaking of seven passengers seating, these are real seats, albeit for children under twelve. The folding back row works like any traditional rear split bench, and has real headrests, unlike the goofy Outlander.

Built larger than most in the compact SUV/Crossover field: TOYOTA Venza, HYUNDAI Tucson and Nissan Roque, the 2011 Sorento delivers a ton of features including double moon-roof, intelligent stereo with text and email reading capability coming in 3rd quarter, heated leather seats, touch-button start, dual climate control, 18” rims, hill descent, traction control and back-up camera with park assist.  All these luxury features for under $32k, WOW!

Yet silly LITTLE things we take for granted, are missing…  NO home link for the garage door, NO power lift gate, NO memory seats and NO mirror in the sun-glass holder option that let’s me see the kids fighting in the rear seats.

The Sorento is reasonably quiet on the road, delivering solid handling and smooth ride on average roads. The engine responds with a surge when you press it from third to fourth and settles out nicely when cruising 80mph+.   Visibility is good, no outrageous blind spots with the third row up and the larger side mirrors with marker lights are a good idea.  I can’t wait for every vehicle to get the vehicle approach sensors in the side mirrors (Ford/Mazda), they are very addicting. The front seats are lacking in the bottom cushion and bolster design but they do offer a modicum of back support for those concerned about long trips. Only the driver’s seat has 8-way power adjustments.

I wish KIA had given the 2011 Sorento some of the cool interior design touches of the Kia Soul: mood lighting/contrasting fabric/leather colors and blue backlit digital gauges like the Kia Forte Koup.

The 2011 Sorento will appeal to a wide variety of clients; it would be nice to have a few more of the hip styling components to go with the technology promised later in the year. This vehicle has not yet been safety crash test rated. 19-29mpg is the average for the 4cyl. vs. 6 cyl., 2wd/4wd.  I didn’t take it off road, so I defer the outward bound limitations for another day.  However, as a solid family sport-ute it delivers on many levels for a great price, especially with the current incentives.
