6.7 Cummins DPF remains a BUYBACK issue.

In a private conversation with some Dodge insiders, the company knows they have issues and are quietly resolving the worst repeat visit offenders with buyback offers. That is not to say the process has been easy. If you own a Dodge, Chrysler or Jeep vehicle you should have a small pamphlet in your manual package. It describes the ARBITRATION process Dodge employs with unhappy customers and unfix-able vehicles.

In simple language here’s what it says:  Prove you have been to the dealership at least four times for the EXACT SAMPLE problem. (You must have dealership service paperwork with specific customer complains about this:…. in the language of the paperwork,)

Contact your dealership service manager and let he/she know (as a courtesy) that you are filing an arbitration complaint about the vehicle.

Once the paperwork (per the forms and instructions in the little brochure) has been sent REGISTERED MAIL, return receipt requested), the factory will contact you via their “unhappy customer” department. The folks I’ve spoken to their, especially Bobbie, have been REALLY nice and handle things very professionally.

Yo may have to show for an appointment with the regional service manager, however, if all the documentation prevails, the third party administrator will make a recommendation.  You may decide all this paperwork is too much out of your life, so hire a lawyer. It’s fine to hire a lawyer, as long as he/she knows manufacturer defect law or is VERY knowledgable about arbitration procedure, but it’s not inexpensive, (Hey, neither was the truck).

This process can take up to six months to complete. The factory has bought trucks back, paid off loans and leases or offered extended warranties where applicable. The bigger issue is for those who have fallen out of the warranty period while enduring all the DPF/regen issues from the beginning of the 2007 release. For those owners, a lifetime warranty on the turbo, engine and all replated parts may be a resolution, but that is up to you. It’s as much the inconvenience and down time, lost work and aggravation as it is the wearing of the parts over the life expectancy of the truck. Dodge Cummins owners have not been rewarded for their loyalty in this latest incarnation, and it is time the factory responded. Don’t give up, go forward.

  1. My 2007 Dodege Mega cab, 6,7L turbo diesel has been in the shop 7 times. I placed it in the shop 5 weeks ago and the best reply I can get from the service department is that Chrysler engineers are working on a self cleaning oxygen sensor that will remedy the problem. My major grief is: 1. why hasn’t crysler notified owners of the problem (are they trying to hide something?), 2. For the price that I payed for the truck, chrysler wouldn’t give me a loaner, 3. I cannot trust the truck. I bought a diesel for it’s dependability and life span (boy, did I mess up). Currently, I’m persueing legal actions through the lemon law. It’s been 2 months and no offer from Chrysler yet.

    Sincerely,

    An All American Soldier

  2. I have had my 2008 in the shop for a total of about 35 days since I bought it in January. The engine light comes on constantly and I have had convertors changed
oxygne sensors and now they tell me I should take out the particulate filter and put in a bypass tube. I say no that is not my responsibility.I have demanded they pay at least one of my payments and I have had nothing but trouble with this truck. The tech said I should not let it sit and idle that is why I bought the diesel in the first place.

  3. I just got my DOG 6.7 deadsel 2500 back from the shop again. They said codes read turbo plugged 1st time so they cleaned. 2nd time, replaced the turbo, trouble code stated turbo plugged again. I bought mine in July 22, 2008 and it was in the shop the first week in August. 800 miles on it. The second time August the 4th.1902 miles. Turbo replaced. I contacted an attorney about the lemon law in Oregon and he stated that I needed 4 separate worksheets with the trouble codes cocerning the emmisions. I am half way there and I can count on it happening again. The whole trouble is with the DPF diesel particulate filter filling up with carbon. This filter is under you truck inline with the cat converter. Each time you have your rig in the dealer they advance the computer to run better with this DPF plugged. Each visit my vehicle runs worse.

  5. i finally ran out of warranty and then my third dpf plugged (try to pay for that one yourself…$2000 +) I have had 5.9′s before and had no trouble. I had no engine trouble or tranny trouble with this ’07 6.7 only dpf cat and egr problems. I built my own 4″ pipe (keep the resonator or it drones in the cab when you tow). and also built my own egr delete kit. H&S makes the right sensors to keep things happy even without a chip. I put on the pipe @100k mi and now have 136k. it runns great and I gained 3.5 mpg towing and 4.7 empty. the 6.7 is a factory stroked 5.9 most things are interchangeable between the two. the trouble is not so much cummins or dodge but epa. I now love the truck and still haul hay every day grossing 55k lbs. fix it up and tell the epa to f$*# off and take it off. I will buy another one in a heartbeat now that I know how to make it run right. the only thing that i needed a warranty for was the shit that I took off. Last week I ran a dyno test, 397 hp 812 ft/lbs 39 lbs boost with no chip yet.
