Cummins 6.7 Debate continues

by

2007-2008 Dodge Ram Cummins 6.7 diesel is causing plenty of controversey among loyal Dodge enthusiasts. Since posting a video on YOUTUBE of Dodge trained technicians discussing removal of the EGR and DPF, I have been beset with comments.

Yes, it appears many individual owners have removed the DPF system, replacing it with a straight-back exhaust pipe. These posters say they have experienced improved fuel economy by 5+ MPG and no noticeable change in performance.  There are acknowledgements of visable “codes” or dash lights.

The debate on the “EDGE” and other performance enhancement computer chips indicate that posters using these after-market components insist on enhanced driving experiences. However the product manufacturer’s own websites note key caveats including this from the EDGE PRODUCTS WEBSITE: “The following power gains are representative of an actual test vehicle. These gains were measured on a SuperFlow Dyno at an altitude of 4400 ft above sea level, and represent power delivered to the rear wheels of the test truck. The only modification made to the test truck was the addition of the Edge Juice with Attitude module. Power gains may vary based on vehicle and geographical location
Level 0: Stock
Level 1: 25 Horsepower – 70 Foot Pounds of Torque
Level 2: 40 Horsepower – 90 Foot Pounds of Torque
Level 3: 50 Horsepower – 120 Foot Pounds of Torque
Level 4: 65 Horsepower – 160 Foot Pounds of Torque
Level 5: 80 Horsepower – 200 Foot Pounds of Torque
Level 6: 100 Horsepower – 250 Foot Pounds of Torque**

The EDGE website does note that in addition to working best at 4,400Ft above sea level, this chip’s fuel economy return depends greatly on the way and conditions with which you drive the truck, and is not applicable for current MY cab and chassis Rams. They also note that to get the information on programming you must sign a waiver and pay an additional fee. (I didn’t pay the fee and could not open the PDF.)

By far, the largest number of responses appear to be from a specific few, arguing the comment on the video, regarding the high temperature necessary to set the REGEN system into mode, has started fires when the vehicle is driven in tall, dry grass.  DODGE (Chrysler) has not placed a heat shield on this component based on these claims. Emails and calls regarding this issue, have not been returned. I’ll let you know what they say, if they respond.  NTHSA, the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration has no current postings on this issue.

til next time. SLM
