Dear Readers,
After reviewing your comments on the troubles you are having with certain 2007 and 2008 6.7 CUMMINS diesel engines, I contacted the staff at Dodge about the problem.
Here is what they said via email.
Chrysler and Cummins have identified an issue with a small number of 2007 and 2008 Dodge Ram Heavy Duty vehicles powered by the new 6.7-liter Cummins Turbo Diesel engine. Chrysler and Cummins are acting quickly to ensure each and every customer concern is addressed. Both companies are committed to the only diesel engine that meets clean-diesel 2010/50-state emissions standards – three years early – and the new technology behind it. Although the vast majority of our customers are not affected, we will quickly reach the reliability levels that customers have enjoyed for years with the 5.9-liter Cummins Turbo Diesel. Chrysler and Cummins have substantial resources to ensure all customers are completely satisfied as quickly as possible.
—– Now I also contacted a few of my personal clients and other Dodge Diesel sales people to ask what they are experiencing.
#1. One friend told me that he had early 2007 complaints that were remedied when the filter in the catalyst was changed and reset. Took one try and was not an issue again.
#2. Several clients reported poor fuel economy until over 20k miles.
I will continue to keep you up to date as I hear more.

We have bought a new dodge truck for the bussiness and haven’t had anything but problems with the 2007 6.7 diesel. We had to have it pulled into the shop for repairs again this week for exhaust problem with some filter in the exhaust system. I have owned dodge diesel for over ten years now and haven’t had the problems that we have on this one. Someone needs to rethink this out or you all will end up like ford 6.0 engines with egg all over your face and looking at layoffs because no customers will trust your product.
Comment by Benny Lambert — 06/26/2008 @ 2:08 pm
I agree with Benny. I have an 07 with the 6.7 and have had it in the shop, 3 different shops, 8 times in 11 months. I’ve had sensors replaced, numerous manual regens, and I’ve had the turbo replaced. My fuel economy is a joke and I try to drive very very conservatively. Dodge put out a product that wasn’t ready to be put out and because of that I’ll be trading my dodge in for a new chevy diesel. I’ve had nothing but problems with the truck and all I get from the service reps is “better luck next time”.

Get a lawyer and go after Chrysler!! You shouldn’t have to lose any money because of this badly designed engine. I have one, and have all the same problems you mention. Get a lemon law attorney asap!! Good luck. P.S. I am using Krohn and Moss!! Great firm…

I just went through arbitration, go through it, we will all get new trucks every year at dodges expense until they fix all the problems with this new truck. I didn’t use an attourney, pretty easy to do.

I have had a 2008 Dodge CTD since Feb. 08. I had had it about 2 weeks when the check engine light came on the first time. Since then, it has been a trip to the dealership once a month for repairs. It has only been once a month due to the cycle time it takes from the time I report the problem, they order parts and I get it back in to have it repaired. My dealership has been great and has always worked around my schedule best they can and gotten it right back out. Still for $50K, it should not be so troublesome. The only way I have found to stop the trips to the dealer is to unplug the EGR. I still have the light on but it is due to the connector being unplugged not a turbo problem PO2262 or any of the other codes associated with the emissions system. I have plugged in with a scanner to see what might have popped up and nothing has!!! I would never have bought the truck if I had known it was going to be this much trouble. I like the power but hate the trips to the dealership. It has had the turbo, particulate filter, O2 sensors all replaced and still codes pop up. What is it going to cost to keep the truck after the warranty is up. It already costs enough in additional fuel due to the crappy mileage 25% more than my previous CTD. I am considering arbitration.

’07 dodge 6.7 and all the same problems mentioned. I sat in the waiting room at our dealership service department and there were 3 people including myself who were in for their 2007 CTD. What are those odds?

I have an ’07 with the 6.7 and have had it in the shop 7 times in 14 months. I too get the “better luck next time” attitude from all three of the dealerships i’ve taken it to. I honestly have nothing good to say about the truck. It’s been a thorn in my side since I hit 2200 miles. Hopefully I will have “better luck next time”….with my duramax.
Comment by patrick — 12/23/2008 @ 10:01 pm
I have owned severel dodges and this one has got to be the worst.. has no power and shitty fuel mileage I have 22000 miles on it and have hated it since I drove it off the lot.. Thinking about putting an older engine in
Comment by Bryan Bohn — 12/29/2008 @ 6:29 am
I bought my 07 dodge in november of 07. 6 months later I put a 5 inch straight pipe, yes a STRAIGHT PIPE, (special order) and the Bully Dog PMT. With just these little upgrades it changed the truck big time! I have a flat bed with a welder and all my welding stuff on it and the truck alone weighs about 12000. Stock it seemed like the truck had a hard time pullin its self but now it does it with ease. Only problems ive had was the wiring harness for the injectors and a O2 sensor….so far, but i still wish i had my 06 duramax!

I have this 07 6.7 and well I’ve had CUMMINS in all my dodges for years. This is the worst engine I’ve had for mileage. Well 17000kms the engine is done. Dealer is replacing it at the moment. Seems at -30 the engine kicked all the oil out through the dip stick. So watch out you guy’s with no Warranty. I was told I lost the first in North America. I hope I get an up dated model that has no issues.

Please contact me regarding problems with 6.7 litre Cummins(R) Turbo Diesel engines. WE have a case pending on an alleged need for replacement of the entire fuel system, because they claim “excessive water in the fuel system.” If you have had same experiences, please provide information.

I to have a 6.7 diesel, previously owned a 5.9 diesel, the turbo has been replaced once & has been in repetedely for engine light. The problem seems to be taken care of, the dealership has been wonderful about the problems. I am getting ready to put a mudule in the truck to add about 50 to 75 hp to the motor. I am a little concerened if thier could be an issue down the road, if this emmisions problem comes back. By the way the dealer is istalling the modules from superchips. I had one in myold truck & would reccomend it.
Comment by chuck — 01/31/2009 @ 6:51 pm
I have an early 07 cummins 6.7. I to have had all the parts mentioned above replaced TOO MANY TIMES! Now the dealer is claiming that because I installed a Greeen Mile air filter which greatly increased my fuel mileage, NO MORE WARRANTY. I just turned 60k miles. I can’t believe my ears. What the heack are they thinking. Are they trying to lose valuable customers, or what?
Comment by George — 04/04/2009 @ 12:58 pm

i have a 2008 2500 and i am having so many problems with the turbo pluging up. also having censor getting replaced. i have tryed all the things that the video told me to do that i got with my truck and nothing works.I would like to know if putting the banks system on the truck would help.also my fuel mileage sucks. thank god the dealership i bought it from is treating me good, because i am not happy with the problems i am having.
Comment by allen carlson — 05/08/2009 @ 5:37 am
I have a 2007 6.7 diesel, 6 speed manual. I have not had any problems with the truck. The truck likes to be worked, the dealer tells me the only trucks he sees is the trucks that are not used for pulling or working.
I work my truck with a 32 foot 8000lb travel trailer, and when I am not pulling, I run the truck very hard once a week to keep the soot blown out. I too have unplugged my erg just to see what happens. Noticable more power, and 3 mpg gain. i have also added a K&N replacement air filter.

I bought a 08 2500 6.7 and love it. added Banks intake and exhaust and it made a huge difference in turbo spoll time. I get no less than 23 mpg every tank and doesn’t drop below 15mpg towing my toy hauler. I must of got lucky! Every one says at 20k miles I should get better MPG. I’m at 19k so can’t wait to get even more. I just wish there were more after market programers like the 5.9.

I own a 2008 6.7 cummins, and I have the problem with the check engine light, loss of power… bad purchase.
Comment by Miguel A. Morales — 08/17/2009 @ 3:33 pm
Purchased a 2008 6.7 six speed manual. the truck has 20,000 on it right now at over a year old. Drove daughter to school seven blocks the other day started it drover her to school and in three block the exhaust filter was 80% full. Have heard of a man in Lamesa Texas that will fix the problem but it has not been proven whether or not your warranty is voided. I load it down when I drive it and it gets 8 miles to the gallon if Im lucky. Feels like the Turbo is lagging may be my imagination.
Comment by John Gaskins — 08/19/2009 @ 8:45 am
To all I have a 07 bought in july of 07 . I have had like problems but I have only taken it in 3 times . Amd done what they say not to do . Run 500 ppm diesel, let it idle . and so forth. Went to a H&s 5″ turbo back and nothing else and mileage is 19.5 no problems. as far as the void the warranty you may have to fight with them but they have 2 prove the changes you have made caused the damage . this is not well known because dodge does not want to admit it but the the engine is warrantied by cummins and they say no prob..

I have an 08 2500 6.7 CTD auto. I really like the truck, but at about 4,000 mls from new it has lost a little power. It use to spin tyres at 1/2 throttle and take off real quick. Now When I floor it from idle theres nothing for about 1.5 seconds and then it goes with no-where near as good acceleration as when it was new. Can even spin tyres now on a wet road. When turbo finally spools up it seems ok. Any idea what problem could be guys please?
Comment by Erin McConkey — 09/25/2009 @ 4:25 am
I meant “I can’t even spin tyres now on a wet road”

i have 07 w/ 6.7ltr 3500, 50k mi, same problems, just took it to dealer, they installed new update (like they do every time) & cleaned the o2 sensor, drove great, throtle responce & power was outstanding, for the 1st 1k mi, now back to same lemon i had befor, gonna try cleaning it myself & maybe unplugging egr sensor, hope someone can get it right & let us all know.
Comment by beau — 10/08/2009 @ 6:58 pm
2008 cummins 6.7l, love the truck hate the dpf, its a pain in the ass. Nice that the salesman informed me that I had to pull something all the time or else I would clog up my filters. BTW when your filters are clogged it spits the soot back up into your turbo, (wonder how long the turbo will last) flipping the check engine light. These probs are going to keep happening as long as these filters are on there. They should let us take these filters off and straight pipe the truck and keep our warranty, this is the only way to fix the prob. Straight pipe and a programmer, thats it.
Comment by J.D. — 10/15/2009 @ 6:49 pm
I have a 07 3500, the 6.7 is junk. Aparrently its good without egr and dpf but I dont want to void my warrany. I pull a 3 car wedge trailer and get 8-9 mpg and the dealer is telling me i’m not beating on it hard enough. Just dropped it off at naperville dodge the other day for 80% cat. message, got it back and it had about half the power and the day after that the engine light came on. I’ve lost thousands by not having the truck and the dealer wants me to pay for a half tank of fuel they neaded to run a test. What a mistake, I wish dodge would just swap out this turd for a 5.9. Oh yeah if the truck wasn’t under warranty all this crap would be costing me close to $3000. So humans have decided to solve the emissions issue by burning more fuel!!!??? brilliant!

Looking for answers… I have a 07 2500 6.7 and I am having the same problems as all of you and hearing the same crap. They tell me not to let the truck ideal. Is that a joke or are they really that stupid. They also tell me to run my truck with the exhaust brake engaged at all times. Not sure I should be doing that. I have about 58,000 miles on my truck and I have been in and out of the shop so many times I can’t count. I really want to keep my truck, but if this can not be resolved I will not be paying out of pocket for all of these repairs. looking into lemon laws and possible law suit.
Comment by James Hufnall — 12/23/2009 @ 10:46 am
I have the same problem too. It is a 2008 6.7 and every time i turn over a few hundred miles on it and the check MIF light continues to light up. How does arbitration work. Im getting tired of the problem.
Comment by james frank — 01/19/2010 @ 6:28 pm
I just bought a brand new 09 6.7L 2500. no problems so far but mpg sucks. I got better in my lifted Z71. Does unplugging the EGR turn on the check eng light? I have been bugging Dodge to let me straight pipe it but they try to find anything to void warr.
Comment by Mike — 03/06/2010 @ 6:08 pm
yes, unplugging it and not having a “fake-out” sensor in there will have that cel staring at you until you stick some black electrical tape over it or get a delete kit.
Comment by mycarlady — 03/06/2010 @ 11:44 pm
Are most of the problems with this new diesel only with 2007 and 2008? I didn’t see much mention with the 2009 and 2010 models.
Please enlighten me.

I have a 2007 6.7 and love it. The only problem I have is the oil change light comes on every 2500 miles I just reset it and on the third reset I get the oil changed. Other then that truck is great knock on wood:)

I HAVE A 2008 DODGE 3500 DUALLY. I ALSO HAD THE PROBLEM OF THE PTF CLOGGING. I GOT ON THE INTERNET AND ORDERED THE EGR DELETE, STRAIGHT PIPE EXHAUST AND PROGRAMMER. IT IS LIKE NIGHT AND DAY THE DIFFERENCE. EVERY ONE IS TALKING SHIT ABOUT THE 6.7 BUT THE 6.7 IS NOT THE PROBLEM. THE EMISSION SHIT IS THE PROBLEM. I HAVE SO MUCH MORE POWER, MORE FUEL ECONOMY ALSO. THIS TRUCK IS A TOTALLY DIFFERENT ANIMAL!!! IT IS BAS ASS! I CAN BURN ALL FOUR BACK TIRES.DO WHAT I DID AND YOU WILL HAVE A DURAMAX, POWER STROKE EATING MACHINE.
Comment by JOE MEDEIROS — 09/22/2011 @ 8:24 pm
THIS TRUCK WILL DO 125 MILES AN HOUR, AND DRAG A POWER JOKE OR A DURAMAX. NO SHIT. YOU PEOPLE NEED TO REALIZE IT IS NOT THE 6.7 ENGINE. ITS THE EMMISSIONS. TAKE THE SHIT OFF!!
Comment by JOE MEDEIROS — 09/22/2011 @ 8:27 pm
I have an 07 3500 dually & the engine light has been going on & off since I bought it. It’s been in the shop about 10 times & some of the times they can’t diagnose the problem. I’m taking it in tomorrow for a new turbocharger & they’re telling me I’m not working it hard enough, same as they’re telling everybody else. It’s still under warrenty but they charged me $300 last time I took it in because they said they couldn’t find anything wrong with it, now the turbo’s out, right. Warranty is up next year & it doesn’t seem like dodge is addressing the issue for a permanent fix.
Comment by david wills — 09/27/2011 @ 6:34 pm
I am thinking about geting a 2008,2500 6.7. what is the cost of the EGR delete, straight pipe exhaust and programmer? Nice truck love to own one if it is worth it.
Comment by RUBERT — 10/06/2011 @ 9:00 pm
The general cost is around $1000 for the pipe and chips/sensors that self-program. The smart programmers can be another 500.00 repending on which one you buy.
Comment by MYCARLADY — 10/06/2011 @ 10:14 pm
I have & 08ctd bought new in 08 drove 100 miles to work for 7 years & have 88,500 miles on it. Had in shop 4 times for dpf problems & last time was for cleaning of egr & other cleaning,& turbo cleaning i’d have to look in manual for it. Gas mileage at 1st sucked. Then put S&P air intake, deleted dpf,& put edge programer on it. Getting 19- 20 mpg on hwy, but engine light still on. Have to clear code all the time, (dpf pressure to low) & now think im having egr problems. It will sometimes have no acceration & power & pure out black smoke, then run just fine. So what u think on this ? Buddys have 5.9 & no problems with all this emsion problems. Love the truck when running good, lots of power. Just wish it didnt have dpf & egr problems with them.

Just bought a 2008 3500 dually ctd about a month ago. Has 112000kms. Haven’t had problems yet but by the way you guys are talking I haven’t got much to look forward too. Maybe a should have went for the new ford diesel.
